Melasti Ceremony is a Hindu religious ceremony to purify Bhuana Alit (small world) and Bhuana Agung (the universe). This ceremony is performed with a parade procession followed by thousand of Hindu people by bringing all the equipment ceremonies and the symbol of gods to the sea or other water sources that are believed by Hindus as a place to purify all the elements of this universe. The usual symbols of gods brought to the sea are Keris, spears, banners (Umbul-umbul), statues, Barong etc. This procession is one of the unique Hindu ceremonies where the procession was followed by thousands of Hindus who wear the clothes and other accessories in white to indicate the purity.

Melasti Ceremony Purpose

The purpose of this Melasti ceremony is to purify Bhuana Alit (small world) and Bhuana Agung (this universe) from bad influences, bad deeds and bad thoughts. Bhuana Alit (small world) is meaning the heart / soul of each individual who lives in this world while Bhuana Agung was the wide world or this universe. This ceremony is very important value to remind /realize how important this life and we need a day to purify ourselves and the universe. With this ceremony, all the components that live in this world have a clean soul so the world can survive from the threat of a bad thing.

When this ceremony is held?

Melasti ceremony held once a year to coincide the welcome of Nyepi Day / Silent Day. Melasti procession is usually held four / three days before Nyepi / Silent Day. This is done because in accordance to the purpose of this ceremony where before Nyepi Day that all the elements at Bhuana Alit and Bhuana Agung should be clean and pure. This is very important because the feelings / heart clean and pure, we can implement Nyepi Day perfectly.

Tenganan village is geographically located among the hill in west and east part of this village. This village is situated in Manggis sub district and Karangasem Regency or about 1 hour drive from Denpasar Town. It’s a small village consisted of three Banjars (group of local community) these are Banjar Kauh, Banjar Tengah and Banjar Pande

Perang Pandan is restricted to Tenganan village only. The phrase “ perang pandan “ is a two words noun in Indonesian language, whereas in Tenganan this warfare dance is named “ makare-karean “ This event is carried out during the ceremony of the temple referred to as “ Ngusaba “ It’s unusual as a result of this type of ceremony can also be known by the rest of Balinese, particularly these living on lowland with rice irrigation system referred to as “ Ngusaba Nini “ The fundamental concept of this ceremony is to request an excellent rice harvest. At lowland space this ceremony is not a regular one, however it is decided by the village elders with ritual leaders in a plenary meeting. Whereas in Tenganan village it is a regular ceremony based on Caka year calendar and is organized in the village temple. While at lowland areas especially in Gianyar regency this is carried out in ceremony referred to as “ Maleladan “ ( a procession along the village primary road toward the temple ). It is arduous to grasp who influenced whom in this case. Seeing from the identify of the ceremony it should be an influence of lowland, since the remainder of ceremonies and customary group’s terminologies Tenganan is specific, and “ Ngusaba “ is belong to a mid-Balinese vocabulary ( ca. 14 to sixteen century A.D.), an era when the Majapahit influence was becoming intensive.
